TFQ podcast, Oscar Robertson (#14) Episode: NBA Free Agency, NFL & MLB News

Blair Miller > THE SHIT SHOW, Oscar Robertson Version (Ep. 14) & Appendix

Recorded Monday, July 7, 2014

It was goddamn humid during The Shit Show this week, but Count Yorga and I (Jerkules) kept the A/C and fans off to give you our weekly scoop on the sports world – uncensored insight, as usual.

In #PROPS & #DROPS we recognize praiseworthy and shameful deeds in the sports world. We tweet several of them throughout the week. Follow Jerkules and TFQ at-large @TFQuarter, and Yorga @count_yorga on Twitter. Here are the ones that require highlights/links to better appreciate.

#PROPS to Rockets rookie Nick Johnson for this mammoth lefty dunk in the NBA Summer League.

#PROPS to Rangers centerfielder Leonys Martin, who got nasty on his former teammate by robbing Oriole Nelson Cruz of a homer.

#PROPS to the Cleveland Indians for turning a crazy-rare 7-2-4 triple play against the Dodgers. We agreed that there should be an inner #DROPS to Los Angeles outfielder Yasiel Puig for squeezing out yet another brain fart to help the Tribe complete the play. Here’s the play.

As always, we did What I Saw, a news section for more discussion-worth shit that happened over the last week.

Yorga saw Jon Maciel, a pitcher for the West Michigan Whitecaps hit a bird in midair with a pitch. Obviously we had to refer to the ridiculous, cartoonish bird-splosion caused by a Randy Johnson pitch back in 2001.

I saw Saints TE Jimmy Graham get his request to be considered as a wide receiver for a franchise tag denied in an arbitration hearing. We talk about this at length – the legitimacy of the decision, the relevance of it. I refer to an analysis by FiveThirtyEight ‘s Nate Silver, which argues that Graham’s success is largely due to QB Drew Brees. I’m not about to disagree with that claim, but I take issue with Silver’s use of ESPN’s Real Quarterback Rating (QBR) to help determine how Graham might fare with more average quarterbacks. To me, QBR stands as an opponent to the traditional Passer Rating. Cold Hard Football Facts has been making a rock-solid statistical argument about the correlation of Passer Rating Differential to wins and losses for a while.

I saw a ton of NBA free agency action – and the superstars haven’t even decided on teams yet!

I have a new hash tag/phrase for what separates some free agents from others this offseason: #walletdontlie, after Rasheed Wallace’s old “ball don’t lie” saying, which he’d use whenever a player missed a free throw after what ’Sheed deemed a questionable call got the player to the charity stripe. In this sense, if players like Dwayne Wade or others opt for more money and hamstring their team’s roster as a result, or Tim Duncan and other Spurs take less money to have a better chance at winning, well, guys can say whatever they want to the media about being committed to winning, but #walletdontlie. By the way, here’s a great way to describe how Duncan’s wallet don’t lie, how he sacrifices cash for success.

Here’s the box score for our Weekly Woodshed, when the Nats whupped the Cubs 13-0.

Ep. 8 of TFQ’s new podcast: NBA Playoffs & more

Blair Miller > THE SHIT SHOW, Episode 8 & Links

It looks like the last two long weekends – Canada’s Victoria Day was last week, and Memorial Day just ended in the U.S. – have ushered in some summery weather. Finally.

With the hot weather comes a hot-as-fuck Episode 8 of The Shit Show. We recorded it just before last night’s Game 4 between the Heat and the Pacers, and we tried to make the episode shorter since it was a 4-day break since Ep. 7 (we delayed that for the NBA Draft Lottery), but, well, you know. We started blazing, and we just love talking sports that much.

Listen to the podcast here

In What I Saw we detailed a pretty fun Sunday in the MLB. Yorga brought up the Yunel Escobar vs. the Red Sox bench incident, which led to us reminiscing about the time current White Sox manger Robin Ventura once tried to take on Nolan Ryan.

I also slapped a What I Saw at the silly spat Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson and his Seahawks counterpart Richard Sherman, which was started by Peterson’s assertion that Sherman isn’t a shutdown cornerback. (FYI: There are NO shutdown corners anymore.) Here’s a scoop on the start of the spat.

I explain during the podcast, but here’s my tweet response. (I was also stoned, and called him “Patterson” at least once. I regret nothing.)

As always, we did our weekly #PROPS and #DROPS segment, which is partly a recap of our tweets throughout the past week. You can follow The Fifth Quarter @TFQuarter and Yorga at @count_yorga

We gave out an easy #DROPS to Pacers F Lance Stephenson for saying he thought he was getting under Heat F LeBron James’ skin because James was trash talking to him. This was my tweet at the time of the news:

SPOILER ALERT: Soon after this, Yorga comes dangerously close to implying that Stephenson should whack off James prior to Game 4.

SPOILER ALERT 2: That almost certainly didn’t happen before Game 4.

Yorga #PROPS-upped a situation in which a budding minor league baseball star hit his first pro home run…and his father caught the ball.

I gave #PROPS to Heat president Pat Riley for finally being on the verge of cashing in – literally – on his trademarked phrase “3-Peat”, which he first coined in the early 1980s when he was coaching the Lakers, who had won two straight championships. It’s taken until now for Riley to be connected to another possible 3-Peat, so he’s been filing more trademarks for the phrase on shit ranging from jewelry, sports memorabilia and even linens. If you don’t believe me, check this.

After #PROPS and #DROPS I realized we’d been going for a while, and said that Yorga might have to impersonate me while I made another Gin & Juice, a la Ed Rooney’s secretary, Grace, in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Go to 3:14 of this clip to see what I mean.

We also dusted off our segment called Stop The Movie, Start The Madness with a look at the Bill Cosby megaflop Leonard Part 6 because I have nicknamed Spurs F Kawhi Leonard as Leonard Part 2. (After his jersey number.) It was tough sledding,b tu we did it, and gave y’all some fun references that we’ll likely ride into the ground for the rest of the NBA playoffs. Also, we’ve named the segment after this Simpsons episode. For those of you who aren’t up to snuff – or should I say sniff – this is the episode when Homer starts snorting steak like he’s Steaky Montana.

We talked a bit about the movie and how some moments/things could be used for goofy analogies for Kawhi Leonard reference.  (Who we will now refer to as Kawhi Leonard Part 2, after his jersey number.) Our favourite nonsensical part of the film was that part of Leonard’s superspy uniform was this helmet:

IPSO FACTO-Leonard

I had so many #DROPS during which I got on a soapbox, and then was harsh about Heat F Chris Bosh’s lack of aggressiveness just before Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals, that I said I was grinding my gears this week, which is a shout-out to this great Family Guy moment.

Our Weekly Woodshed looked at the nice new veranda addition the Spurs put onto their playoff woodshed this season. Here’s the box score.

With that, we head off into the sunset, looking forward to Ep. 9 of The Shit Show. Stay tuned!!

TFQ’s New Podcast Is Up And Running!

Blair Miller > THE SHIT SHOW, Episode 1

Like us on Facebook, follow us @TFQuarter and @count_yorga

Hey, sports world! We’re happy to announce some exciting changes at The Fifth Quarter, most importantly the start of our new podcast, The Shit Show.

Listen to the podcast here.

Hosted by yours truly (aka Jerkules) and Count Yorga, The Shit Show is a (mostly) weekly podcast where we will hang out and talk sports in the usual vein that TFQ followers are used to.

It’s our first crack at this, and we plan to get better as we go, but keep any comments coming. The podcast will soon be available on iTunes, and we are also changing our domain name and web layout – more on those to come.

In Episode 1 of The Shit Show we cover a lot of topics – while watching the final round of the Masters, won by Bubba Watson.

Here’s a list of what we discuss:

–       WHAT I SAW: A current events segment.

–       WEEKLY WOODSHED: A weekly segment where we look at a big blowout. This week: Hawks over Pacers

–       NFL FREE AGENCY: Our look at which team has done the best/worst thus far.

–       THE MASTERS: Thoughts on the tourney so far, while we watch the first half of the final round.

–       STATGASM: A weekly segment centered on statistical analysis.

–       NBA PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Seeds aren’t finalized, so we make general predictions.

–       MLB PREVIEW: Division winners, Wild Cards, underdogs and overrated teams.

–       BOLD PREDICTIONS: Each week we end the episode with a look into our own twisted crystal balls. (Yes, we have glass onions.)

Listen to the podcast here.

During the podcast, we promised a sort of appendix – a set of links to some references we made during each episode. Here’s this week’s set of references.

Yorga said we would inflict the torture of Draft Day upon ourselves so that you know how bad it sucks before you decide to see it. (I had planned to go alone, but Yorga agreed to go during the podcast, which will turn out to be disastrous for his brain-how.)   Here’s a trailer for the movie. Sorry.

I mentioned TFQ’s NFL 2013 Upside Down Awards. Check ’em out.

I said that last season Texans QB Matt Schaub shit the bed more than Spud in Trainspotting. Those of you who have read my What I Saw column during the NFL season will know this reference. Here’s the source.

Episode 1’s Weekly Woodshed was the Hawks beating the Pacers 107-88. Here’s the box score, courtesy ESPN.com.

Here’s that dangerous YouTube montage of 10 hours of Doctor Hibbert laughing. (I like to make that laugh when Pacers C Roy Hibbert comes up.)

I said “I’ll get you, Jonas Blixt!”, which was a reference to Team America: World Police.

Stay tuned next week for Episode 2 of The Shit Show!

We may not record on the same day each week, but next week we’ll be recording on Sunday again in honour of 4/20!  We’ll always try to pump out one episode every week or so, unless we say otherwise.  Stay tuned!
