Our leading (and only) basketball writer gives his, um, blunted, unconventional – and occasionally obsessively detailed – take on recent happenings in the hoops world.
I’ve about had it with Raptors head coach Dwayne Casey not playing Jonas Valanciunas enough. Tonight’s triple overtime game was the last straw, as the second-year center played just 29 minutes out of 62 – with no personal fouls and getting 10 rebounds – while Wizards C Marcin Gortat torched Toronto all night.
A young developing player has to be allowed to fail, but Casey isn’t letting that happen. It’s hard to blame Jonas if he starts looking to the bench whenever he makes a mistake at this point. If Raptors GM Masai Ujiri wants to get maximum return out of his center, he might have to consider a coaching change.
